Dispute Over Parking Spot in Shenandoah Turns Violent and Costly

A dispute over a parking spot got violent and potentially rather costly for a Shenandoah man a few weeks ago.

According to an affidavit filed by police in Shenandoah, an officer was called to N. West St. on the night of Feb. 17 for a reported dispute over parking.

The caller reportedly told police that he’d moved an orange traffic cone that’d been placed in a parking spot on N. West St. After moving the cone, the caller, who police identify as the victim in this incident, said he parked his vehicle in the spot.

Just a few minutes after doing that, the victim told police he heard a man yelling on the street. When he looked outside, he saw a man kicking the front and rear passenger-side doors of his vehicle.

Police say they saw two large dents in the doors that were allegedly kicked. The dents had sneaker prints on them, leading police to believe that these dents were caused by kicks. A dent on the front driver-side door was noted by police and also believed to have been the result of a kick.

Further, that orange traffic cone was placed on the hood of the victim’s vehicle.

Police say they made contact with the person the victim had identified as the one responsible for the damage to his vehice, 47-year-old Michael Teaschenko. Upon meeting Teaschenko, police say he smelled of alcohol and allegedly admitted to kicking the vehicle in question.

Teaschenko allegedly told police that he was at a pool match and when he came home, he saw the cone moved and got upset. He then told police that they should investigate other vehicles on the street that were taking up spots because they weren’t legal.

Police say Teaschenko said he didn’t care that he’d be charged criminally for the damage he allegedly caused. Teaschenko was also told to avoid contact with the victim in this incident.

Estimates on the damage done to the victim’s vehicle range from $4,094-4,357.

Teaschenko has been charged with criminal mischief, a misdemeanor, as well as summary offenses of public drunkenness and disorderly conduct. A preliminary hearing is currently scheduled for April 3 before District Magistrate Judge Anthony Kilker.
