Schuylkill County Man Tased While Trying to Flee Police on a Bicycle

Homeless man was wanted by police

A Schuylkill County man was arrested after he unsuccessfully attempted to avoid arrest by pedaling away from a police officer.

According to court documents filed by police in Shenandoah, Jacob Schopfer, who is listed as homeless, was spotted riding a bicycle on the afternoon of May 1 in the area of W. Lloyd and N. Chestnut streets.

Police say they knew that Schopfer was a fugitive wanted by State Police. And as the Shenandoah officer parked his patrol vehicle, they say Schopfer attempted to hide from view behind a parked car with his bicycle.

When the officer exited his vehicle, Schopfer reportedly got on his bicycle and pedaled away, increasing his speed as he was ordered to stop.

Verbal commands to give up were given but Schopfer continued to pedal away with the officer pursuing him on foot.

When this chase reached W. Arlington St., the officer says he used his Taser as Schopfer “attempted to weave to avoid the Taser probes.” the probes hit, however and Schopfer fell to the ground and he was taken into custody.

During the chase, police say Schopfer threw a gray bag on the ground at N. Chestnut St. When the bag was searched, police say they found a pair of hypodermic needles, a clear, glass pipe with residue on it, and a metal spoon.

Schopfer was arraigned before District Magistrate Judge Anthony Kilker later that day. He was charged with felony flight to avoid apprehension and misdemeanors for evading arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kilker set bail at 10% of $10,000, which hasn’t been posted and Schopfer remains in Schuylkill County Prison.
