Police: Schuylkill County Man Threatens to Put Woman to Sleep, Applies Headlock

A Schuylkill County man has been jailed after police say he put a woman in a headlock in a domestic violence incident.

According to court documents, police in Mahanoy City responded to a domestic altercation on E. Centre St. on May 31.

When police arrived on the scene, both parties involved were separated from each other. The alleged victim of this incident told police that she and the accused – identified as Jarelle Canyon, 35, of Minersville – were arguing. At one point during the argument, she told police that Canyon came up to her and put his fist in her face.

The victim told police she pushed Canyon away from her and that resulted in him getting back in her face with a closed fist. She said that she punched Canyon to get away from him.

Canyon allegedly responded by saying, “I’m gonna put you to sleep” to the victim. He then reportedly pushed the victim on her back and got on top of her.

The victim told police that Canyon put his arm around her neck to a point where she was unable to breathe. Canyon then allegedly applied a headlock to the victim.

Police say the victim had redness, bruising, and scratches on both sides of her throat. She also had redness under her one eye and on her temple.

Canyon was arraigned shortly after midnight on June 1 before District Magistrate Judge David Plachko. Police have charged him with felony strangulation and misdemeanors for simple assault and reckless endangerment.

Plachko set bail at $50,000 cash and remanded him to Schuylkill County Prison. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 19 before Judge Anthony Kilker.
