Schuylkill County Woman Charged After Reported Melee During Custody Exchange Tuesday

Police say she hit man in the face with a bottle, smashed vehicle windows, and threw woman’s belongings in Schuylkill River.

A Schuylkill County woman is facing a felony aggravated assault and other charges following a reported brouhaha in Cressona Tuesday night.

According to court documents, eight State Police officers were dispatched to a reported active fight on Pottsville St. in Cressona shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Upon their arrival, the victims – a man and woman – of this incident told police that they drove to a home on Pottsville St. for a custody exchange. During that custody exchange, the female victim said she got into a verbal altercation with the mother of the male victim’s child.

It was at this time that police say Tabitha Schriner, 31, escalated the altercation by trying to pry the female victim from her vehicle. Schriner had a glass bottle in her hand at the time she was trying to pry the woman from her vehicle.

A physical fight then broke out between Schriner and the female victim, police say. Schriner reportedly punched the female victim multiple times, causing a minor injury, police say.

The male victim tried to break up the fight by separating the two women. While doing that, Schriner reportedly hit him in the face with the glass bottle she had in her hand. That caused a laceration on the bridge of the male victim’s nose, police say.

Eventually, Schriner and the female victim were separated. Schriner then came at the female victim’s vehicle one more time, hitting it multiple times with an ice scraper. This caused major damage to the front and rear windshields and the driver’s side window on the vehicle, police say.

Schriner then grabbed the female victim’s belongings from her vehicle, including a cell phone and cross-body bag and threw them in the Schuylkill River behind the home on Pottsville St.

Schriner was arraigned early Wednesday morning before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer. She’s being charged with aggravated assault and two counts of criminal mischief, all felonies, along with misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief and theft and a summary offense of harassment.

Bayer released Schriner on $25,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for July 17 before Judge AJ Serina.
