When Schuylkill County drivers get a flat, Jerry Katz brings the tire shop to them. As the owner of Katzy’s Mobile Tire Services, Katz turned his desire to escape the indoors into a growing roadside business on wheels.
So he gave up that career and decided to launch his own business, Katzy’s Mobile Tire Services. The business is located just outside Orwigsburg but the unique quality about the service Katz provides is that he brings a full-service tire shop to wherever it’s needed.
Flat tire on the side of the road? Need all new tires on your ride? Katz brings his repair vehicle to wherever you may be and gets the job done on the spot.
And most importantly, Katz fulfills a goal of not working indoors all the time.
“I really wanted to get outside,” Katz tells The Canary. “I really wanted to start my own business, so I started looking for something I can get into and do, deal with people and bring them a sense of happiness.”
On Thursday afternoon, Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce officials were joined by other business and civic officials to help Katz cut the ribbon to celebrate the grand opening of Katzy’s Mobile Tire Services.
The business has been open for about 18 months and at Thursday’s ceremony, Katz actually renewed his annual membership with the Chamber. In that time, Katz says he’s been able to bring that happiness to people.
When he decided to start being his own boss, Katz wasn’t certain that a mobile tire service would be his choice. He said a friend introduced him to a person who owns a similar business elsewhere and Katz thought it’d be a good fit for his skills and the area.
“I really wanted to be able to help people out and I found there was a great market for this,” Katz says. “Nobody has time to go to a tire shop. Everybody wants everything now and everybody wants convenience.”
Once he settled on the business idea of a mobile tire shop, Katz first outfitted a trailer to haul his equipment to job sites. That turned into a box truck that’s outfitted with everything he needs.
“I got the truck, set that up, and it’s been golden every since,” he says.
And now, he says, it may be time to expand and bring in extra help to meet the demand for his services.
